About the Item
Signed oil on canvas coastal landscape by French modern painter Maurice Brianchon who was known as one of the Painters of Poetic Reality. This simple and charming piece depicts a view of the beach at Soorts-Hossegor on a grey day. The figures of two soldiers walk across the sand and others are gathered on the walkway beyond.

As a young man, Maurice Brianchon studied at school in Le Mans before joining the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He went on to study at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, remaining there from 1917 to 1923 and working under the direction of Eugène Morand. It was here that he met and became friends with Oudot and Legueult. When he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne he was immediately elected as a member. He received the Blumenthal Award in 1924 and the Carnegie Prize in 1939. He was a founder member of the Salon des Tuileries and was appointed to serve on the committee in 1941. He also exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He took part in major exhibitions abroad, including the Venice Triennale, Antwerp, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Madrid, Brussels and Stockholm.
He soon made his mark as a decorative artist, creating stage sets for the Opéra for a production of Griséldis (1922) in collaboration with Legueult, and for Noble and Sentimental Waltzes ( Valses Nobles et Sentimentales) (1938), Sylvia (1941) and The Model Animals ( Les Animaux Modèles) (1944). He created a large, decorative piece entitled Symphony at the Palais de Chaillot, where he worked with Chapelain-Midy, Planson and Oudot. He also decorated the Lycée Janson-de-Sailly with murals. With his wife Marguerite Louppe he produced three large panels commissioned by the state in 1942 for the Conservatoire. The Gobelins and Aubusson tapestry works produced tapestries after his cartoons. He also produced cartoons for stained glass windows at the church of Assy in 1946. He taught at the Estienne school and the École des Arts Décoratifs in 1937 and in 1949 at the École des Beaux-Arts.
He often painted landscapes showing the banks of the Seine, as did the Impressionists, and demonstrated a particular interest in circuses and music halls, as can be seen in Acrobats and French Can Can. He also painted more intimate interiors, including Studio and Model, and seascapes such as Beach. His themes are therefore similar to those of Bonnard, from whom he took inspiration for his layout and use of colour, though remaining true to duller tones and a less rich palette.
While his work is in many ways typical of the taste of French society between the wars, its restraint gives it the qualities of a Bonnard transposed into harmonies of grey, enlivened by brief touches of colour. He showed little concern for the aesthetic preoccupations of the period and belonged to an appealing French tradition of art that includes the École de Paris (Paris School), who described themselves as 'painters of poetic reality' and who, in 1956, held a major exhibition of which Brianchon was naturally a part.

Maurice Brianchon
Maurice Brianchon (French, 1899–1979) was born in 1899 in the village of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe to Parisian parents. After a classical education, he began his official art training at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1917. Early public recognition of his talent came when, at the age of 23, he was appointed a member of the committee of the Salon d’Automne. The following year he won the Prix Blumenthal which enabled him to live in Spain for a time where he studied the paintings of the Spanish Masters, with a particular interest in Diego Velásquez.

The aspiration to be a painter stems from his childhood and before leaving Poland, he won the first prize in an art competition for children. Zamy was formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and at the Royal Academy of London. Upon completing his studies, Zamy earnestly pursued his career and establish his place in the art world by displaying his work in one man exhibits and arts fairs around the world. His art displays chromatic and thematic richness and his choice of subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition, his Eastern European Jewish heritage and folklore. Zamy’s popular themes include Paris cafes, still-life, flowers, circuses and landscapes. Circus with acrobats and Harlequin. In the early stages of his career, he was partial to rich pastels and light brush strokes. In the early 1980s, Zamy visited South America, where the new surroundings enhanced his work with local brightness and color. His art gained chromatic power and his palette became richer in tones as the textures became thicker and the background darker and more colorful. These changes coupled with his thematic persistence allowed him to develop into a sensitive and mature artist. Zamy expresses a universal humanistic vision in his creations: man’s connection to his heritage and physical surroundings, two imperative aspects of our lives that should be heralded during these estranged technological times. As a result of his devotion to world peace, Zamy is known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway. He is acquainted with many Nobel Prize winners including Anwar Sadat, Menachem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu and Oscar Arias, the ex-President of Costa Rica, along with many other politicians and artists. Zamy tragically passed away in September 2000. Franz Anton Coufal (Austrian, 1927 - 1999) Painter and sculptor known for figure painting, bronze sculpture, genre paintings and as a graphic artist. After completing an apprenticeship as a locksmith, Franz Anton Coufal attended the Graphic Education and Research Institute in Vienna from 1947 to 1949 as a student of André Roder and from 1949 to 1953 took lessons from Ignaz Schönbrunner. From 1953 to 1959 he finally studied with Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts (diploma and master school award 1959). Coufal then went on study trips to Germany and Italy and then settled in Vienna as a sculptor and graphic artist. His work bears the influence of Austrian Magic Realism and the artists Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Arik Erich Brauer and Ernst Fuchs. THis work also has Expressionist elements to it. He organized exhibitions in Vienna (from 1955), Paris (1962, 1970) and Brussels (1964) as well as in other Austrian cities. His most important works include the honorary grave for Leopold Figl in the central cemetery (1966). In 1979 he provided the design for the face of the silver 100 schilling coin "Festival and Congress House Bregenz", in 1980 he created the Lehár monument for the city park, and in 1987 he received the special prize in the "Danube Region Vienna" competition.
